A Google Play Books alternative without the account
Google Play Books does something most readers do not: it lets you upload your own EPUB and PDF files and read them on the web and on your phone. It is a capable free reader. The cost of entry is a Google account, and a library that lives inside a store attached to the largest advertising business in the world.
Whose cloud your library sits in
Uploading to Play Books moves your books into Google's storage, under a Google account, inside a product that is also a bookstore. For a lot of people that is a fine trade for free storage and a good mobile app.
Scrolla's default is that your books stay on your device and the cloud is optional. If you turn sync on with Premium, it goes to storage you already control — your own Google Drive or Dropbox — rather than into a library owned by the reader. You can point it somewhere else, or turn it off, without losing the books.
No ads, and nothing measuring you
This site loads no analytics and no advertising scripts, and neither does the reader. That is not a positioning statement, it is a fact you can verify from your browser's network tab, and it is why the privacy policy has no cookie-consent banner attached to it — there is no tracking to consent to.
Premium subscriptions are the only revenue, which keeps the incentives pointed at readers instead of at engagement.
